If you have been involved in internet marketing for any length of time, then you know how important SEO (search engine optimization) is. Perhaps you have even done a few things to get links back to your site to help boost your rankings. However, what a lot of website owners don’t know is that you can get a large boost through proper internal link building.

As with anything else, some ways of internal linking are better than others. The funny thing is that doing it wrong can take more work for less return on your efforts. The right way requires you to focus on three main areas: anchor text, site navigation, and in-context linking. We will look at each of those in turn.

Anchor text are words that are hyper linked. When it comes to internal link building, anchor text refers to links to different pages within the same website, or links to different places on the same page. The biggest mistake people tend to make is that they use just any old words for their anchor text. One of the most common is “Click Here”. Yes, you may want people to click there, but unless you are trying to rank for the phrase “click here” in the search engine, you are wasting your links. Instead, use keywords in your anchor text like this: “get deals on floor lamps here”, or “floor lamps”. This sends the signal to the search engines that you consider these specific words worth linking from.

Good site navigation is vital to any website, but when it comes to internal link building it’s even more important. At the very least, you need to link to your most important pages from your main navigation menu. To get even better results you should cross link to every optimized page from every other optimized page. Also, adding a site map will help link it all together in the eyes of some search engines and it has the added benefit of being easy to do. Be sure to add a privacy policy and contact page, as these will lend credibility to your site.

In-context linking is a combination of the above two internal link building methods. These are keyword links that go to different parts of your site. While anchor text could be found in a menu or list, in-context linking is part of the main content on your site. It can have elements of site navigation, especially when the links help visitors move about the site in a logical way.

There are other things that can be done, but if you do these, you will be far ahead of all of your competition that doesn’t take the time to do these basic things. The main thing to remember is that all of the words and links on your website matter; what words you choose to link and where those links go to. If you do it right, you will get a natural SEO boost, and that’s always a good thing.

The Basics Of Link Building

For many webmasters, SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is at the top of the list of marketing duties. SEO involves different tasks to get your website to rank as high as it can in the search engines. This article will cover some of the basics of link building help your site get seen by more people when they conduct searches.

Getting links to point back to your site is one of the main ways people implement SEO. The reason this works is because when the search engines crawl websites, they check to see what other sites are being linked to. If you get a link on a site that is relevant to yours (in the eyes of the search engine) your site will look better. Now, if you can get a lot of these links, your site will start to climb higher and higher in the search engine results.

Why does any of this matter? After all, there are other ways to get traffic besides search engines, right? That’s true, but there are a lot of people that will only find you through the search engines. Furthermore, the closer to the top of the results pages you are, the more likely they are to see the link to your site and visit it.

Keep in mind that while you can do things to rank higher, the search engines are not their to serve your desire to get traffic; at least not entirely. What they are there for is to give relevant results to their users. That’s why the sites sending links back to your site need to be relevant. In fact, the more a particular search engine likes the site linking to you, the more benefit you’ll receive.

This all sounds great. Just get a bunch of links to your site and do a few other SEO things and you’ll be at #1 in no time, right? Not necessarily. You also have to make sure you have high quality content on your site. After all, the people visiting your site need to like what they see, otherwise you have wasted a lot of time and effort. To put it simply: it’s alright to do SEO, but don’t forget that you are creating your site for people.

You can get links back to your site by swapping links with other webmasters. However, you need to give this some thought to make sure the links you’re getting will be looked on favorably by the search engines. Another way is to write articles and submit them to article directories. The articles will have a link back to your site. Leaving comments on blogs (again with your link) is the method of link building preferred by a lot of people.

Whatever ways of link building you choose, the key is to get a large amount of links and to make sure the sites linking back to you are relevant. This can take some time, but it’s a good investment if you know what you’re doing. The back linking methods we just covered are a good start, but don’t stop there. The more you know about various SEO techniques, the more you can use them to your advantage.

For high-end projects or higher paid freelance work, meeting clients in person is often more effective than meeting clients online. Why? Because a lot of people would rather hand over thousand-dollar checks to people they know than people they don’t know.

You may be able to charge as much as double or triple your online rates by meeting clients offline rather than online.

How do you meet clients offline? Here are a few places to look.

=> Start with the People You Know

Instead of meeting new people, you’re often better off networking through people who already know and trust you.

Make it known among people you know what you’re up to these days. The more you can create a sense that you know what you’re doing, that you’re “the person” to send referrals to among your network, the better.

Always thank anyone who sends you a referral. Take them to lunch or dinner. Make them feel appreciated. In the future, they’ll likely send you more business.

This also applies to your actual clients. When they come from friends, they’re much more connected to your network than people who you’ve only met online. Make sure all your clients are totally satisfied and you’ll find even more referrals coming in.

=> Go to Events Where Potential Clients Go

Let’s say you’re a graphic designer. Where might you meet the kinds of people who would hire you?

One likely place is in meetings with small business owners who are making a profit but want to increase their business.

In this case, after doing a bit of research, you might come up with these events to attend:

* Your local Chamber of Commerce

* The Commonwealth Club meetings

* Two local entrepreneurship groups

* A realtor’s networking group (they often need brochures for home listings)

* Etc.

Two great places to look for great meeting and event listings include Craigslist and Meetup

The ideal place to meet your clients really depends on what kind of service you’re providing. Keep a list of places to visit regularly and continue to expand this list over time. Always be on the lookout for new places to meet clients.

=> How to Make a Favorable Impression

Avoid the “business card swap” strategy, where both parties swap business cards and never see each other again.

Instead, aim to make just one to three good connections per night. You have a much better chance of landing a client that way than swapping twenty business cards.

If they appear to be someone who could use your services, start exploring the subject with them. Focus on how you might be able to help their business, rather than trying to land a sale right away.

Don’t make it your goal to land them as a client right then and there. Instead, go for a second meeting. At the actual event, people are usually more focused on the event than you. So get their phone number, set a time and place to meet if possible, then have the actual sales conversation later.

Finding clients by networking in person is a much more effective way of landing high-end clients than using online advertising. Start with your own network, then meet new people through networking events. Get to know them and figure out how you can help them before trying to sell them your services.

If you were to hazard a guess into the kind of results you would get if you searched for some kind of popular item to buy on Google, say mattresses, what would you think of? Perhaps the few local results from mattress stores in your area or perhaps something from a major mattress manufacturer or a Wikipedia result? What if you were to search for furniture or curtains? You would probably expect something from say Bed, Bath and Beyond or Walmart. Over the holidays, something very strange happened. No matter what you searched for to do with clothing or home furnishings, there was only one company that came to the top of your searches – it was JCPenney. Sometimes, even if you searched for a specific brand, JCPenney would still come up ahead of the manufacturers’ websites for the brand. Certainly, JCPenney is a major company that deserves to be somewhere near the top for relevant searches. But how is it that they managed to make it to the very top for scores of kinds of products? Especially when there are other retail companies vying for that coveted spot? Was the retailer on to some kind of super successful search engine optimization techniques no one else knew about?

As it turns out, the only thing super successful about their methods was how they managed to stay clear of Google’s scrutiny for this long. Everyone really knows about black hat search engine optimization techniques; if people don’t try these more often, it’s because Google will then flag the company down as a cheater and penalize them. “Somehow”, JCPenney got away with what they did for as long as they did. One wonders why on earth they felt that they could do something like this and not have it hurts their reputation. So what exactly is it that the company did? It’s the same thing that BMW did a while ago (and got caught for it).

How does Google know what website to buoy up to the top of its search results page? If there are enough reputable websites on the Internet with links to a given page, Google thinks that there’s probably something pretty special about that page. It gives that page to boost. That’s if you want valuable organic results that you don’t pay Google an advertising fee for. There is another way to pay to get your results bumps to the top. But this one requires going around Google. If, you happen to own a website about embroidery and you want to see your website move up in the search results when someone searches with the keyword phrase “embroidery craft”, for example, you need to contact other websites that deal in embroidery-related stuff and ask them to link to your website for that keyword phrase. If you can’t find any other embroidery websites to link to you, you can just go to any no-name website that deals in garbage of any kind, pay them a fee and ask them to link to your website just the same. If you have a thousand websites (dealing in any kind of stuff that bears no relation to what your website deals in) like this linking to yours, Google is still going to be impressed until someone alerts it as to what is going on. And that is what this retailer did.

Or is it? The European Union is questioning major advertisers on Google to learn if Google gives them preferential treatment in the organic search results in return for a lot of advertising revenue from them. If things like this didn’t happen, how would one explain how JCPenney got away with it for so long? There’s no way to prove it right now; but if these are the search engine optimization techniques the search engines are rewarding, there really is little hope for regular businesses with small budgets.
